South Ayrshire
Council in partnership with East Ayrshire Council have purchased a specialist
vehicle called a Jetpatcher®, that will be used to repair potholes and other road
damage.
Leader of South Ayrshire Council Councillor Andy Hill said: "The Jetpatcher® is a
marvellous piece of machinery, that assists staff in carrying out quick and
lasting road repairs. With this machine there is no need for temporary repairs,
the work is carried out in one process.
"I am delighted that South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire Councils have been able
to invest jointly in this new technology, which will be of benefit to so many
people."
The Jetpatcher® is a truck mounted road patcher, which enables
potholes and surface blemishes to be repaired quickly and inexpensively. A long
hose with a hand held nozzle delivers compressed air and aggregate mixed with
bitumen. When making a repair air is first us ed
to jet out any debris and water from the hole. The bitumen emulsion is
introduced into the air stream, and forced into any cracks and fissures, sealing
the defect. The prepared cavity is filled with a mixture
of aggregate and emulsion which harden almost immediately.
The process offers many advantages over traditional patching methods such as
semi-permanent repairs, greatly increased production, little or no waste,
reduced waiting time, no need for compaction equipment and improved health and
safety.
