A Hole new way to patch up roads

A ROAD-MENDING technique developed on the other side of the world could be the answer to the problem of potholes on Coventry's roads.

The city council is turning to New Zealand for inspiration in dealing with cracked and broken sections of road surface which plague motorists and cyclists as they travel round the city.

This week council workers have been trying a technique called Jetpatching, developed by New Zealand based company Jetpatcher®.

They are testing the company's claims that a 30 m sq area of damaged road, which would previously have taken four hours to repair, only takes 20 minutes with the new technique.

Once the potholes have been filled, a specially-designed van sprays sand, tar and other road-mending materials at high speed over the damaged road in a bid to stop any more potholes appearing until permanent repairs are carried out.

The council's cabinet member for community services Cllr Jack Harrison, said: "The city council has been trying out a new process from New Zealand that offers positive benefits improving Coventry's roads and that is also quick and cost effective."

If the experiment is successful the council will consider hiring the van at a cost of about £400 a day.

The council launched a pothole rapid response team in May following public concern about the problem. The phone number to report potholes is 0500 834333.
