BRITAIN'S
crumbling minor roads have built up a £5billion backlog of repairs and are in
'crisis' condition, civil engineers are warning.
The bill for required maintenance work on local authority-run highways, which
exclude trunk roads and motorways, has increased by £800million in the past
year.
Claims for injury and damage caused by badly-maintained roads and footpaths have
increased against nearly seven out of ten councils.
David Bayliss, chairman of the transport board of the Institution of Civil
Engineers, which carried out the survey, said: "If nothing is done the crisis
will get worse."
